    I still don't understand it 100%: Doesn't the much bigger field of view of roman mean, that a hubble sized part of it would end up with much less light for the same area? Can the bigger sensors compensate this completely?

    Sorry, but the shape of the mirrors (i.e. the optical formula) allows for a larger field of view.  Then the detector. The very first wifpic (wide field and planetary) camera of the HST had 4 800x800 pixels CCDs. Now we can do slightly better.

    An important point here is why it has a larger fov is not just the sensor, but also the smaller focal length. They are both brilliant telescopes, but they will be used slightly differently with the different fov's and focal length (57 vs 19 meters respectively). Which is still a crazy amount for roman. What makes roman so amazing is not just the fov, but also how fast the optics are (can gather a lot of light in a shorter amount of time) at an f/7.9 focal ratio compared to Hubbles f/24. So the fast optics and fov will make for an incredible telescope that scan large patches of the sky in a shorter time.

    A couple of telescope parameters you didn't mention - focal length and f-ratio. 

    Focal length is how much a telescope magnifies.  The Hubble has a focal length of 57.6 meters while the Roman has a focal length of 18.96 meters, so Hubble magnifies more than Roman.  The Hubble produces an image of a given object about 3 times larger than Roman.  On Hubble, 1 arc minute of sky is spread over 16.8 mm on the sensor where Roman is only 5.5 mm.  Think of a 300mm versus 28mm camera lens. 

    However, to compensate for shorter focal length, Roman has smaller pixels than Hubble, sampling the image provided by the mirror more finely and making it able to resolve objects in the near infrared similar to Hubble. 

    That leads to f-ratio, which is how efficient the telescope is at gathering light. It is calculated by dividing the focal length by the diameter of the mirror.  Hubble has an f-ratio of f/24 while Roman has an f-ratio of f/7.9.  Roman has approximately 9 times higher light concentration per pixel than Hubble and why it can image much faster than Hubble.

    The resolution is the same because the mirrors are the same diameter.  Resolution depends on the wavelength of light and the diameter of the mirror, specifically resolution  = 1.22 x wavelength / Diameter.

    The field of view isn't controlled by just the sensor size (like she says), it's controlled by sensor size AND focal length.  Because of the longer focal length of the Hubble, it only has a field of view (how much of the sky it sees) of 0.05 square degrees while Roman has a view of 0.28 square degrees, about 100 times larger.  Plus, Roman has a much larger sensor than Hubble.  Think a 4 x 5" sheet film versus a 35mm slide.

    So Roman gathers light much faster over a larger area than Hubble, and why Roman can complete a survey in 17 months that would take Hubble 17 years.

    For reference, the Hubble telescope was designed to resolve Cepheid variables (a very important tool for measuring cosmic distances) in nearby galaxies to calibrate the Hubble constant, the expansion rate of the universe.

    Hubble trades survey speed and wide coverage to achieve unrivaled spatial resolution in UV and visible light. Roman trades UV coverage and super-high optical magnification to capture Hubble-quality near-infrared resolution across vast swathes of space at unprecedented speed.

    funny thing is, that and another one were military telescopes then considered obsolete and donated to NASA. the Roman was easily refurbished for space observation, the second one however is very specialized for ground sp- I mean observation, and a lot of people think it would be great to send it to Mars, for example. we could map the surface with unprecedented level of detail, plan future missions and landing sites, it would be really really cool!

    There will probably be hiccups and limitations as it starts. Do you have any anticipation of what these are and how long we expect to go through some kind of calibration or troubleshooting phase yet?     I worked at a company over here that makes Image Sensors, possibly made some for this but I can't say because I haven't worked there for long time.

    I will say in some departments I felt like the dumbest person in the room. There were a lot of very smart people there.

    However I will say the company was well ahead of the curve for chip design. They made a 4K sensor and camera in the early 2000s.

    So if their stuff is on there it, I was probably their during the preliminary stuff but the sensors would have amazing quality.


    I can't wait to see the results of this.

    Depending on the sensor, Hubble had  4Kx4K and 21Kx1K sensors. The Nancy Grace Roman uses 18 sensors (4Kx4K) giving a total of 300 MP

    Real quick, you're just amazing! And really just a wonderful breath of fresh air for those of us amateur astrophysicists! So thank you truly:)...now I have too ask a stupid question...I always heard that there was two other identical Hubble's, one for the Air Force to always point down at Earth and I think NASA had a sorta spare...is this true?     I don't understand how the same mirror can collect more data at the same resolution and dimness just because of the camera. Do the Hubble cameras only record a tiny percent of the available information coming from the mirror? ALSO--and I realize the degree to which images overlap may influence this--but in one place you say the Roman can do 100 times what the Hubble does, in another 12 times (17 months vs 17 years) and in another 1,200 times (one month vs 100 years) and I don't understand that, either.

    If you have the same number of pixels, that means the image will be a lot more blurry.

    Just be be precise: the Hubble cameras were replaced during STS-125 in May of 2009.  However, they were supposed to fly in 2005, so Hubbles cameras were designed more than thirty years ago.

    Ironically, Hubble’s total field of view is greater than Roman’s WideField Instrument. The catch is Hubble is based on a two-mirror Ritchie-Chrétien optical design which corrects for spherical, coma, and astigmatism, but cannot correct for field curvature. The prime focal plane is picked off by five separate instruments, plus three outlying fine guidance instruments. The entire focal plane spans over 1° field of view. But each instrument has a tiny field of view which is relayed to their individual sensors where the limited field curvature (and Hubble’s residual spherical aberration error) are corrected as needed.

    Roman uses a Three Mirror Anastigmat optical design, which allows for a large, flat corrected image plane at prime focus — the perfect place to have 18 sensors covering the equivalent of a ~0.8° x 0.4° field of view! ???

    It's more than just the modern sensor that allows the much larger coverage. The Hubble has a focal length of 57 meters while the Roman has a focal length of 19 meters. It has a much wider field of view, combined with the larger sensor.

    I don't know if it applies to these two telescopes, but couldn't you also have a different focal length for the mirror? Like for a camera you could have a zoom lens or a wide-angle lens which are both about the same size, one just bends the light a lot more. You can do that with mirrors too, like those bathroom mirrors on an arm where one side is pretty flat and the other is more curved so it magnifies the reflection.

    This always made me wonder why they didn't make more than one. The engineering and design phase is fine, now it's just parts and labor. It's *reletively* cheap to add a second satellite so we can have that much more information that much faster.

    The Hubble had a computer Intel *_486!_* Pretty archaic today. Maybe the Roman won't need spectacles after it goes up.

    When the Hubble was first launched in 1990, it was discovered that the primary mirror suffered from spherical aberration, meaning it had been ground to the wrong specifications. This meant that many of the images it captured in its first three years were fuzzy. A servicing mission in 1993 corrected the problem.

    If Hubble captured less than 1% (0.1% according to the article shown) in 36 years - it is impossible to say that the 12% Roman may capture in 17 months would have taken Hubble 17 years (halfway the video). It is more correct what you state at the end of your video: it would have taken Hubble over a century to do so.

    Since Hubble was built to have replacement parts (like the cameras) theoretically Hubble could be upgraded with newer detectors and cameras. Unfortunately, we no longer have the equipment and will to have something like the space shuttle built and operated.

    Iirc Hubble is also based on technology of the KH-11 spy satellites and Roman will be using mirrors donated by the NRO of the same origin.

    a little constructive criticism: you use several different comparison that contradict each other. You said: roman covers 12% of the sky in 17 month and hubble took less than 1% in 36 years but then also say that 12% wouldve taken hubble 17 years and at the end you also said that roman can now do in month what wouldve taken Hubble a century. Now i *think* i know what you mean and why hubble has only taken less than 1% in 36 year (long exposure images is my guess) but using so many comparison that all seem to go against each other might lead to people who are not familiar to be more confused. Anyways im excited so lets absolutely launch ’em and get some beautiful data and pictures ?

    When I was growing up, I had the same NatGeo poster, "A Map of The Heavens" hanging in my bedroom (or possibly the 1970 version).  It's shown behind her when she's pointing a pencil at the Stargazer model.

    Amazingly, they still update it and have a modern version, plus versions updated through the decades since.  Anybody else have/had one?

    I'm old enough to remember Children's BBC John Craven's news round reporting plans to create and launch Hubble. Hubble had me excited. JWST had me excited. This one not so much. Maybe I watch too much astronomy stuff.

    But thank you Hubble for paving the way to all these modern telescopes with their newer technology.

    Bear in mind that when NASA still had space shuttle they did upgrade Hubble, few times, with better instruments (not the initial optics correction)

    If shuttle or other still existed we might have updated Hubble. Of course there will be limitations.

    Yes, Roman space telescope is equipped with modern technology.     I remember when Hubble was launched and it was an absolute failure because the mirror was ground incorrectly. And they fixed it a few years later with spectacles. Yes the Hubble telescope has glasses. I thought after the Challenger disaster and the Hubble telescope disaster Nasa had a real danger of being defunded out of existence. The "glasses" mission was fundamental is saving NASA IMO as the PR gained from the incredible photos helped restore people's faith in the mission.

    Could you elaborate on how more pixels makes for a wider field?  I have a fairly deep understanding of film and electronic photography and I'm an amateur astronomer.  The  focal lengths of my telescopes affect the widths of their fields,  If I change the camera to one with more pixels, that  increases the resolution, but not the width of the field.

    This information is not entirely correct. Even though they have the same diameter, the telescopes have different focal lengths. It is this—not the greater number of sensors—that allows for a wider field of view and a larger illuminated area. Roman is f/8, I think, compared with Hubble’s f/24.

    No. It's not just the sensor(s). The mirrors are shaped to different focal lengths. So, just like when you change lenses on a DSLR, a long focal length gives more magnification and a small field of view, whereas a short focal length gives less magnification and a larger field of view.

    Yes, the size of the sensor makes a huge difference, but it's not the only factor.
