Inside a machine shop, a vertical broaching machine pulls a long, multi-toothed cutting tool through a metal workpiece while coolant flows across the cutting area. The broach's closely spaced teeth progressively remove material as the tool travels through the opening, producing a precisely machined internal profile.
Unlike conventional machining methods that require repeated cutting passes, broaching uses a series of teeth arranged with progressively increasing cutting dimensions. Each successive tooth removes a small additional amount of metal, while the final teeth establish the required shape and surface finish. Hydraulic force provides the controlled pulling motion, and cutting fluid helps reduce friction, carry away chips, and manage heat.
Internal broaching is widely used to manufacture splines, keyways, and other complex profiles found in gears, transmission components, and industrial machinery. Its main advantage is the ability to produce highly consistent shapes in a single cutting stroke, making it especially valuable for repetitive production where dimensional accuracy and efficiency are essential.
