I thought there was a misunderstanding? The books were not destroyed to monopolize whatever they contains. They sliced off the spine to make it easier for the books to be scanned then recycle (or perhaps discard, depend on the vendors) the leftover papers instead of putting them back because its more cost efficient.
The books they bought and dismantled were also not rare books or antiques, and certainly not the last copies. They were just regular books for the AI to learn, because not all books are digitally accessible and they want their AI base knowledge to be authentic. It's not like we no longer have access to those knowledge in the form of real books.
The company paid settlements not because of cultural destruction but because apparently, some of the digital ones they gain are pirated books.
I expected Aljazeera to be more accurate in providing information.

Some fifty years ago I watched a movie of a world ruled by authoritarians. It was a dystopian world where books were destroyed to prevent knowledge from spreading, outlawed with very harsh punishment for possession of any books. The movie ended with a person that was running from authorities being met by someone waiting for him in a forest. The people there all had a book memorized to preserve the knowledge.

Do you know the story (and film) “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury? It tells of the systematic destruction of human history and knowledge by the burning of books. If books are unavailable except as electronic copies, there won’t be any knowledge except what artificial intelligence machines permit to exist.
